SUMMARY:Effective Equitable Instruction
DESCRIPTION:What are some core strategies for providing math instruction that is equitable for students? In this session\, we will discuss strategies and then focus on ways to help students make connections within mathematics that can empower them to develop new levels of understanding. We will have both examples of tasks that provide opportunities for connections and a chance for you to plan with other teachers. \nTo register visit: https://tinyurl.com/PLUSMath2

SUMMARY:Celebration of Women in Mathematics: Topological Graph Theory… and YOU!
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: This presentation will introduce the field of topological graph theory. Along the way\, YOU will get to work on some elementary problems and present your insights\, so that YOU will acquire a sense of how mathematicians approach topological graph theory questions. \nBiography: sarah-marie belcastro is a free-range mathematician\, currently Director of MathILy and Research Affiliate at SmithCollege. She earned her Ph.D. from the University of Michigan and did her undergraduate work at Haverford College. sarah-marie’s primary research area is topological graph theory; she is also interested in the mathematics of knitting\, dance\, infectious disease modeling\, and changing the world. She enjoys connecting people to each other\, connecting ideas to each other\, and connecting people to ideas. sarah-marie has written the introductory textbook Discrete Mathematics with Ducks and co-edited the volumes Making Mathematics with Needlework and Crafting by Concepts. \nPresenter’s personal website: http://www.toroidalsnark.net/

SUMMARY:CMP@CPP Monthly Workshop – Getting Ready to Teach Statistics and Data Science
DESCRIPTION:From data presented in news on topics such as elections and public health\, to data analytics reported from social media and fitness apps\, data permeate many aspects of daily life. Calls for data science education focus on the need for all students to become data literate through K-12 education in order to be active and well-informed members of society. Several states are leading data science education efforts by incorporating more statistics and data science in their PreK-12 mathematics standards. In this workshop\, we will discuss recommendations\, resources\, activities\, and investigations to use directly in the classroom that are aligned with the most current guidelines to help deliver statistics and data science in their classroom. \nRegistration Link:\nhttps://cpp.az1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_bfS1E8McDqJvajc \nZoom meeting link: https://cpp.zoom.us/j/85045380239\nPassword: CMP-CPP

SUMMARY:Celebration of Women in Mathematics: Enabling Science through Data Science at Berkeley Lab
DESCRIPTION:Understanding environmental systems\, providing clean water\, predicting water availability\, and understanding material properties are just a few of the areas where data science is enabling science breakthroughs. This talk by Dr. Deb Agarwal (Senior Scientist\, Data Science and Technology) will describe some of these science challenges and the role for data science in helping to address these challenges. In a national laboratory environment\, the focus is on team science and tackling challenges that require an integrated team of people from many disciplines. In this talk Dr. Agarwal will describe some of the challenges data scientists are helping to solve and some of the next data science and machine learning challenges that need to be tackled. \nRegister here: https://us06web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZMtcOuorjIvHtSTHnx5gARCbgMrnTxW6-Ek

SUMMARY:Division of Fractions
DESCRIPTION:DIVISION of Fractions: Grades 4-6\nIn this session you will explore ways to help students\nconceptually understand division of fractions. We will\nuse hands-on manipulatives and the rectangular area\nmodel of division. How does the concept relate to the\nalgorithm? Why do we flip the second fraction when we\ndivide? We will utilize the CCSS Progression Documents\nto model how to teach the beginnings of fractions through\nthe algorithms.\nDate: March 5\, 2022 from 9-11 am\nPresenters: Suzanne Damm & Julie Sliva Spitzer\nRegistration link: Meeting Registration – Zoom

SUMMARY:CMP@CPP Monthly Workshop - History of the CA Math Framework
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a look back at the history of mathematics education policies in California\, that has brought us to the current state in the creation and adoption of a CA Math Framework. All the politics and all the drama will be included\, from 1989 right up to this very moment. The latest draft\, and the last steps in its approval process\, will also be examined. \nNote: Teachers from every grade level are encouraged to attend\, though please note that this workshop will discuss the ideas across the full range of grade levels.

SUMMARY:Focus on Student Thinking: Engage & Reflect
DESCRIPTION:Designed by the Math Project at Sacramento State for K-12 teachers of mathematics\, these workshops (held via Zoom) are designed to not only deepen your understanding of mathematics\, but also to help you reflect on what learning was like last year. With a focus on student thinking we will ask ourselves\, “What is worth keeping?” \nFor our last FOSTER event of the school year we will be working on the “Uncut Spaghetti” problem. Pass through every square with one spaghetti noodle\, making sure to always:\n – Move to an adjacent square that is above\, below\, to the right or left of the square\n – Choose the square with the smallest value\, when there is a choice\n – Only move through open squares that haven’t been passed through before \nHow does this translate to “What to keep?”\nLet’s just say\, it’s always good to have a plan\, but when the noodles fall we need to get creative and stay flexible!

SUMMARY:Math Teachers’ Circle @ CSUDH: I Walk the Line(s)
DESCRIPTION:Come work collaboratively with other math teachers to enrich your problem solving and subject matter knowledge! \nImagine that you live in the city of Cartesia whose streets lie on the lines of a square grid. How can you move around in such a city? How many ways are there for you to move from one point to another? How can you account for obstacles you might encounter as you are moving around the city? In this session\, we will explore this situation\, uncover what deeper mathematics lies behind it\, and discover connections to other seemingly unrelated problems. \nThe CSUDH Math Circle brings together K-12 educators and mathematicians to work on interesting problems and topics in mathematics. Math circle meetings are interactive and lead to deep mathematical concepts. \nVisit https://tinyurl.com/2022MTC3 to register.
