PROGRAMS

The CMP offers a variety of programs designed specifically to meet the needs of teachers of mathematics and the needs of the schools and districts. These programs are funded from many sources including grants, district categorical funds, fee-for-service, and school/district contracts. CMP sponsors intensive professional development institutes, academic year systematic and sustained support, coursework in mathematics, support for students and administrators, and California Subject Examination for Teachers preparation. Programs also target specific teacher groups such as new teachers, teachers from hard-to-staff schools, and teachers seeking certification.

As part of its support for high quality professional development to ensure that every student has a highly qualified teacher, the California Postsecondary Education Commision (CPEC) awarded a five-year master grant to the California Mathematics Project in Fall 2006 entitled California Mathematics Project Supporting Teachers to Increase Retention (CMP STIR). There is a well-documented shortage of fully credentialed mathematics teachers in California classrooms. With its ten subgrantee sites spread across California, CMP STIR aims to increase the retention of current grade 6-12 mathematics teachers in California through the creation and implementation of coherent and comprehensive induction and/or support program(s) for teachers of mathematics in high-need, hard-to-staff and/or PI schools.

The CMP has developed English Language Development Institutes in Mathematics Content (ELDI-MC) that focus on mathematics and ELD Standards, academic language, strategies to provide access to rigorous and high level mathematics content and teacher data.

The Lesson Study through a Mathematics Lens is a 40-hour interactive online course developed to support K-12 mathematics educators as they learn about the process and the implementation of Lesson Study. Participants engage in the key elements of Lesson Study and share the expertise of mathematicians and have the guidance of experienced facilitators throughout the course. Objectives of the course are to examine real life examples and make the abstract clear and attainable, through a team process that utilizes video examples, commentary, practice, and resource materials.

Workshops, institutes, and ongoing professional development are offered year-round through CMP's 19 regional sites and their satellite operations. Programs offered include exemplary teaching practices for teachers that effectively focus on improving K-12 students' mathematics proficiency through:
